How we verify a claim

Before anything publishes under the VERITATEM mark, it clears the same checklist. This explainer is the checklist, in the open.

The verification checklist

Locate the primary source. A claim is only as good as the document behind it. We link the primary source; if we can’t, we say why.
Check the vintage. Data has a date. We state it, and we don’t present old figures as current.
Separate fact from analysis. Reporting, analysis, and opinion are labelled distinctly.
Independent read. A second editor confirms material factual claims before merge.
Correctability. If we later learn we were wrong, the corrections record is updated and the piece is annotated.

Why this is public

Publishing the method is part of the method. If you can see how we check a claim, you can check our checking. That is the point of an independent, fact-based outlet — see editorial independence.

This is a demonstration of the map format. Each demographic map on VERITATEM is rendered client-side from a GeoJSON file that lives in the site’s own data/ folder — so the dataset is downloadable and auditable, not a black box.

Why VERITATEM exists

VERITATEM publishes facts that hold up: sourced reporting, interactive explainers, and demographic maps, in the public interest. This is a placeholder first post, published during our gated-preview phase, to establish the format.

The standard

Three commitments define the work:

Sourced. Every claim of fact carries a source; primary documents are preferred and linked.
Independent. We are an imprint of a holding company, but our owner has no editorial control. See how we work.
Correctable. When we get something wrong, we fix it on the record and say what changed.
